How To Set New Year’s Resolutions & Stick To Them

So it’s coming again… The rush of people heading to the gyms and healthy food aisles. People who’ve decided that 2018 is definitely going to be the year that they get their act together. Whether it’s to do with their health, fitness, or money management, people are forever trying to find quick fixes. We can often end up creating flimsy commitments on the first of January that don’t usually last the month.

 

Do new year’s resolutions even work?

So what do I think of new years resolutions? I think they’re nonsense. Everybody goes into the new year fully expecting their lives to completely change overnight. They completely overhaul their day-to-day life, using only sheer will power.. We all know this isn’t a viable method in the long term. Eventually, we all end up rebounding and resorting to our old bad habits because we haven’t properly laid the foundation in terms of knowledge, small and sustainable changes and setting achievable goals.

 

I mean I could be wrong, no? You could be some form of superhuman that’s perfectly capable of achieving your new year goals if you’ve planned properly, but the majority of us don’t.

I’m just as bad.

 

“This year I’m going to eat well and lose loads of weight, especially if I start using this fitness plan on the 1st of January”

 

Sound familiar? I’ve said it a fair few times. Heading towards February, the crowd at the gym starts to fizzle out, and only those who have properly set long-term goals are still there, working away.

 

So, now you know my stance on New Year resolutions & why I don’t think they’re worth your time. Goal setting PROPERLY IS however your best chance at getting where you want to be.

Do your Research

There’s no point going into anything blindly. Likely you’ll be heading into unchartered territory and you need to know what you’ll be up against. Watch youtube videos, read articles, listen to audiobooks. Look at people who have been successful in what you want to do, and find out what it takes to get there.

Ask yourself WHY

You might have to do some soul searching for this.

If you’re trying to lose weight, don’t just say “coz I want a beach bod”… Look deeper. Do you want to eat cleaner to live a better lifestyle and feel healthier?

If you want a better job or to earn more money, don’t just say “because I want to buy nice things”. Maybe you want to be able to travel the world or want financial freedom.

ENJOY THE PROCESS

If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then why bother? Life really is too short. If you’re finding a way to drop the weight then make sure you’re eating clean foods that you LIKE, and you’re doing exercise that you’re enjoying.

Are you trying to earn more money? Consider doing something that you love! If you’re putting your heart and soul into something, then you won’t see working on your goal as such a chore.

CELEBRATE THE SMALL WINS

Instead of just setting one giant goal, try to celebrate the small wins that you achieve every day. Perhaps you picked water instead of sprite? You hit your 10,000 steps for the day? Or you had a whole day without any added sugar? Whatever it is, keep telling yourself that you’re heading in the right direction. Every small step makes a difference!

START TODAY

Don’t wait for January 1st. We all tend to overindulge in the holidays and spend more than we’re supposed to. The worst thing you can do for yourself is NOTHING!! The strange & awkward existence that we have to deal with between boxing day & new years doesn’t have to be counterproductive! Take small steps towards your goal now, so that it doesn’t feel like a drastic life change come the new year.
